Eli Roth Launches THE HORROR SECTION To Give Fans A Chance To Produce Horror Movies
Crowdfunding is all the rage these days, and we here at Macabre Daily fully support it! The reality is that making a movie can be expensive, and not everyone has the funds to either self-produce their own works or invest in their friends’ films. One of the many challenges and criticisms that crowdfunding has faced is that it essentially offers little in the way of ROI (return on investment) for the backers if things go well. Sure, there are perks that are offered at various levels, but these perks aren’t investments and carry little to no monetary value. While this may not be an issue for some like us, others are more interested in finding ways to make a buck by backing things they think will do well. Hell, you can gamble on Polish ping-pong games, so why not horror movies?
Eli Roth, you know him, the filmmaker behind “Cabin Fever,” “Hostel,” and more recently “Thanksgiving” Is launching his own crowdfunded horror production company, The Horror Section. The venture is also part of the Republic platform that offers other ways to invest in other films including a campaign for Robert Rodriguez. What sets this approach apart from current Kickstarter and Indiegogo campaigns is that these avenues treat you as an investor in the film, which also means you can share in the revenue that’s generated. If we’re being honest, we have mixed feelings on this.
The draw here is that Roth’s films generally turn a profit, which is good, but what isn’t clear is how much money fans will be putting in and what they will get back from that. Budgets for Roth’s films nowadays range from $10-$20 Million, so if one were to invest $1,000 they would only be putting in .001% of the budget. The return on that is not likely to be much if anything. If the idea is to target more wealthy folks, it begs the question, why target this at fans who most likely aren’t that flush with cash? We do hope for the best for this platform as it could change the way fans and filmmakers produce and create, but we also want to acknowledge that this is a business and if you want to play you have to put in more than beer money.
You can sign up for email updates on The Horror Section’s website, and we will bring you more as it becomes available!
