Fede Alvarez Returning For "ALIEN: ROMULUS" Sequel And Plans To Head To "Uncharted Waters"
Director Fede Alvarez gives an update to EMPIRE about the sequel to last year’s “ALIEN: ROMULUS” and where he would like the franchise to go mixing nostalgia and new ideas into one fear-inducing sci-fi epic. Check it out below.
“ALIEN: ROMULUS” was a love letter to the fans of the Alien franchise, there’s no denying that. Director Fede Alvarez and writing partner Rodo Sayagues hit all the major areas the film needed to so that fans could stare at the screen and point out all the tie-ins and “easter eggs” from the other Alien films in the franchise. Nothing was spared. Every single Alien film was referenced or had a brief nod in the film, even Alien: Resurrection (we won’t spoil the flick for you but the ending of Romulus is VERY similar to Resurrection.) was referenced heavily and that, to many was the worst Alien film. The director is obviously a fan of the franchise and wants to see it return to form as it were. Romulus did a good job but what’s next?
Talking with EMPIRE, Alvarez tells the outlet that he wants to go a different direction for the planned sequel from 20th Century Studios and gives an update on the status of the script as well.
“Rodo Sayagues and I are working on that right now,” the filmmaker tells Empire. “We’re excited about where it can go. We’ve almost checked all of the boxes of things that I want to see [in Romulus], and brought back a lot of the things I hadn’t seen in a while. Wherever we go now, we can go into uncharted waters.”
Alvarez also gives us news that the cast from Romulus (who survived) will be returning for the sequel as well. “I think it’ll be so exciting to go with characters you know from this movie, to a place in the Alien franchise that we’ve never been before, and to discover things that you’ve never seen before,” he says. We have no confirmation as of now for the cast of this next film but look out for that in the coming months. Empire also notes that this next film will ONLY move forward if Alvarez and his writing partner can nail down a solid story and have it flow naturally with Romulus.

“The mistake usually with sequels is to make them because you can, and because of the success of Romulus, we definitely can make a sequel,” he states. “But I wouldn’t do it unless we have a really good idea for it, something that’s worthy of the title.”
You really can’t blame Alvarez for his idealism and respect for the ALIEN franchise, especially with legendary names like Ridley Scott and James Cameron tied to its rich legacy and history. We are eager to see where the franchise goes next. Could we finally see the “ALIEN KING” that has popped up in the comic canon for the films? Will we see more synthetics (artificial people) and the Weyland Yutani Corporations choke hold grasp on regular people just to make a profit? Will we see Colonial Marines again? The possibilities are endless with tons of comics and books already focusing on the ALIEN fandom, Alvarez has a lot to choose from.
