Double Halloween Trouble For Your Ears and Eyes!
As we enter the final days of October we at Macabre Daily are reminded that while Halloween is only one day of the year, being a horror fan is a 365 endeavor. While others are clearing their Spotify playlists and streaming service queues of horror-related material to make way for the winter holidays, genre fans are still grooving to spooky sounds and watching high-octane horror movies.
So what better way to continue the Halloween party than with a great collection of underground Halloween music and an anthology that gives off those Hallowed Days vibes during every episode? Thank you to the fine fiends at MVD ENTERTAINMENT for turning us onto these two terribly fun offerings for your earholes and eyeballs.
SPOOKY SOUNDS - HALLOWEEN NUGGETS: HAUNTED UNDERGROUND CLASSICS
If you search Spotify for “Halloween Playlists” you’re likely to get many of the same songs over and over. Thriller and the Monster Mash are great tracks, but they aren’t the only ones out there. What is often sorely lacking in the Halloween music space is more subtle and moody music, like the rockabilly and surfer riffs included on HALLOWEEN NUGGETS: HAUNTED UNDERGROUND CLASSICS.
This release packs 21 tracks comprising a mixture of killer rock songs and classic movie trailer audio giving the perfect soundtrack for a more rockin’ Halloween soiree. The songs are catchy if you are a fan of artists like Dick Dale, The Cramps, or Stray Cats…albeit with a horrific twist. I found myself bobbing my head from start to finish, and will even be using some of these tracks for my upcoming Halloween 2022 mix!
SCARY SIGHTS - THE WITCHING SEASON
Links to purchase: DVD or BLU RAY
While horror-themed TV shows are becoming increasingly more common, there are few that can hold a candle to the vibe and eccentricity of the great TALES FROM THE CRYPT. While that show offered some loose connections to the Halloween holiday, THE WITCHING SEASON is like the Pumpkin-Spiced Latte of horror anthology shows. Steeped in the Halloween holiday, or close to it, each of the five stories included offers a fun indie-horror take on the October tradition seen through the lens of creepy monsters in the dark and killers with knives on the loose.
Each of the episodes ranges from between 10 - 20 minutes and can be binged in a short 90 minutes or taken fun-size style one at a time. Like most anthology shows and films, there is some unevenness between them, but they are all compact enough that even the weaker ones you don’t mind sitting through. Personally, I had a good time with the majority of them with the standouts being “Killer on the Loose”, “They Live Inside Us”, and “Is That You?”. There are also over 2-hours of bonus features on the disc, so if you really enjoyed any or all of the segments there is sure to be some additional material to quench your (blood)thirst!
