HORROR FOR WEENIES Book Launch With Emily C. Hughes, Erin E. Adams, Clay McLeod Chapman, And More! (EVENT REVIEW)

Here’s the thing, getting off the couch can be hard.   When you get home at the end of a long day it can be really hard rallying to go back out.  We all lead busy lives and don’t even get us started on work.  “We know you need the file by end of day BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD!!!”  You deserve to kick your feet up, have a cocktail and just relax.  But here’s the thing, LIVE EVENTS are fun, we mean really fun. And LIVE EVENTS about anything horror are the MOST fun and last night at the Greenlight Bookstore in Brooklyn, we may have had the most fun ever!

As you can see from the pictures included here, last night was an amazing conversation with Emily C. Hughes co-hosted by Erin E. Adams and Clay McLeod Chapman about Emily’s newly released horror movie reference guide, “HORROR FOR WEENIES: Everything You Need to Know About the Films You’re Too Scared to Watch.”  This book is a must-have for the scare-curious and horror-obsessed alike.  You can read our review of it here.

It was a raucous, light-hearted conversation about what exactly a “WEENIE” is and how best to ease them into not only watching horror movies but maybe even enjoying them in the process.  The packed crowd was more than happy to participate in Q and A’s regarding the best gateway horror to introduce a scaredy cat too; most answers leaned toward horror/comedies and “kids on bikes” films, what kinds of films to avoid at all costs so you don’t scare them away forever; “Hereditary” being the hands-down winner there and can a WEENIE eventually become a full-blooded horror movie fanatic; the responding “YES” damn near blew the roof off the bookstore!

There was an adorable moment when Emily’s father called “Final Girls” by the name “Last Girls” and if it were possible to be visually hugged to death by an audience he came alarmingly close.  We’re skipping the best part of the whole night though, the introduction.  After a hilarious and welcoming warm-up by bookstore manager Ashli, Emily Hughes comes flying into the room chased by Clay Mcleod Chapman dressed head to toe as a 6 foot 2 inch Coney Island hot dog.  We’re not gonna lie…he looked delicious!  Having been cornered, her doom all but assured Emily whips out a machete and proceeds to make Pigs in a Blanket out of Clay to the delight of everyone in the crowd.  These are the things you don’t get unless you’re there in person and that’s why sometimes getting off that couch can not only be a fantastic night out, it can lead to some fantastic surprises.  Imagine our delight when we turned around to bump into none other than horror rockstar Nat Cassidy.  That’s the great thing about LIVE EVENTS, they draw everyone in.  You never know who you may rub elbows with and that just adds to the excitement.

We'd be remiss if we didn’t give Quirk Books a massive thank you for publishing Emily’s amazing book and providing the wine for the evening.  We were told after the discussion ended and the book signing was about to begin that we had polished off every case of wine provided by Quirk and in the history of events at Greenlight Books that had never happened before.  Horror lovers know how to have a good time! At a time when it’s all too easy to bounce from one streamer to the next, it’s so refreshing to get out and be part of something so real, exciting, and entertaining. We can’t recommend these author events enough.  Find your favorite writer, go on their website or Instagram, and find out when they’re coming to a town near you.  We promise you won’t regret it and you never know who you may meet.
