'It Follows' Set To Receive A Sequel 'They Follow' Almost 10 Years Later: Here's What We Know
It was recently announced by the indie film production company Neon that the cult classic film ‘It Follows’ will finally be receiving a sequel after almost ten years. David Robert Mitchell will return to write/direct the new film which was revealed to be titled ‘They Follow’ along with Maika Monroe who will reprise her role as Jay. We could only hope that Disasterpeace will also return to compose the score for They Follow because let’s face it, the music was absolutely everything. Production is set to begin in 2024 with a release date of late 2024 or 2025.
It Follows synopsis: After an unusual sexual encounter with her new boyfriend Hugh (Jake Weary), Jay (Maika Monroe) comes to the realization that she is being followed by something, an entity that is passed on through sex and if it catches up to you, it kills you. The only way to get rid of it is to “pass it on” to someone else.
The ending of It Follows lends perfectly for a sequel; Paul, played by Keir Gilchrist, and Jay are walking through Jay’s neighborhood while holding hands, they pass by kids playing in their front yard and people going about their day. The next scene is shot head-on while they’re walking and it can be seen in the distance behind them that someone is following them…
One thing that was missing from It Follows that I think we will receive in They Follow is an origin story. Where did the entity spawn from? Who started passing “it” down the line? Another interesting thought; as I mentioned previously at the end of It Follows there is someone walking behind Jay and Paul, but who exactly is it following? I think that when Jay tried to pass it on to Paul, it failed completely. I truly believe that the entity has some serious beef with Jay and wants to get to her first. Especially since she may have been the first person to actually try to kill it, which I think might have backfired. In the pool scene towards the end of the film when Paul finally shoots the entity in the head and the water turns red with blood, I think that was a way of saying that it’s spreading and getting stronger. Maybe strong enough to follow two people at once?
For years it was rumored that It Follows would never receive a sequel and I think we all just kind of accepted that because it was such a well-done stand-alone film. The originality of the storyline along with its anxiety-inducing tone set the standards pretty high for new-age horror during the mid-2010s, it also has a pretty impressive score on Rotten Tomatoes with a 95%, despite all the mixed reviews surrounding the film. We can’t wait to see what tricks David Robert Mitchell has up his sleeve with They Follow.
