Tommy Spero Of BOWMAN & BUTCHER Showcases His Vibrant And Iconic Horror Art!
The greatest horror movies of all time reach that pinnacle because they leave an indelible mark on our psyche. To represent that feeling visually, the fear, suspense, anxiety, and intensity in art are nothing less than extraordinary. Finding someone with this ability to do so in your backyard is almost too good to be true. Imagine our surprise when we stumbled upon Tommy Spero’s masterworks while aimlessly strolling a recent Artists Market this past summer. It was like walking into a fever dream. Print after print, woodcut after woodcut, the old and new classics were displayed in bold, vibrant pop art colors that screamed to be noticed. Insanely creative interpretations of some of the most beloved monsters to ever grace the silver screen were brought to life in a unique modern style that paid tribute to the genre while propelling them into the 21st century. We had no choice but to buy a few pieces, and we’ve done so repeatedly. If you love horror, and we know you do, and appreciate incredible craftsmanship and creativity, you have no choice but to see Tommy’s work. You can view and purchase Tommy’s creations directly from his website, Bowmanandbutcher.com, and we highly recommend signing up for the newsletter, where you’ll be kept up to date on new releases and local appearances.
This October, Long Islanders were lucky to catch Tommy’s solo show, “MONSTER—The Pop Horror Art of Tommy Spero,” at Industry in Huntington, NY. The walls were filled with fantastic interpretations of pop culture icons, viewed through the lens of the macabre to classic Universal Monsters in glorious black-and-white and mod pop palettes. Tommy’s visual style is something to behold, as old meets new in exciting new directions.
Tommy Spero is a lifelong musician, visual artist, and graphic designer who is passionate about horror and music. Growing up in the vibrant cultural landscape of the 1970s and 1980s, Tommy’s fascination with horror movies and his penchant for creating bloody makeup effects on neighborhood friends laid the foundation for his unique artistic vision. He refers to his style as "pop horror," blending cool aesthetics with macabre themes.
Tommy will be doing a collaboration with Scream Queen icon Felissa Rose on December 8th at Cinema Arts Center in Huntington, NY. Tickets are on sale now and Tommy will be creating a one of a kind poster for this incredible event.
