"ASH" (2025) Is Trippy Sci-Fi/Horror, But Does It Stick The Landing? (VIDEO REVIEW)

Sci-fi horror is a sub-genre we can’t get enough of at Macabre Daily. That mix of futuristic exploration, ambition, cosmic dread, and destruction is peanut butter and chocolate as far as we’re concerned. So when we heard Flying Lotus (“VHS 99”) was making a trippy, head-spinning off-world fright flick, we set our phasers to “stoked.” Starring Eiza González (“Baby Driver”) and Aaron Paul (“Breaking Bad”), this film looks to blend deep space thrills and claustrophobic intensity with eye-popping visuals and a banging score. Editor-in-Chief Matt Orozco and Contributor Sean O’Connor watched the film and sat down to unpack the movie, what works, what doesn’t, and the bottom line. Have a look at the video below and enjoy!

SYNOPSIS:

On the mysterious planet of Ash, Riya (González) awakens to find her crew slaughtered. When a man named Brion (Paul) arrives to rescue her, an ordeal of psychological and physical terror ensues while Riya and Brion must decide if they can trust one another to survive.

EDITOR’S NOTE: We apologize for mispronouncing Eiza’s name in the video.
