Troma Film fans, get ready—Legendary Pictures has finally unveiled the first look at Peter Dinklage as “The Toxic Avenger”, and it’s everything we hoped for. The cult-classic hero is back with a fresh new take, bringing the iconic, grime-soaked vigilante to a whole new audience. But that’s not all—there’s plenty more to dive into. Read on for all the details!
Macon Blair’s remake of “The Toxic Avenger” has us eagerly anticipating how he’ll reinvent our beloved Toxie. Thankfully, we won’t have to wait much longer—our friends at Cineverse and Bloody Disgusting will be bringing the fully unrated film to theaters on August 29th.
Entertainment Weekly unveiled the first official photos of Peter Dinklage as the iconic hero today and caught up with Blair to discuss what this fresh take has in store for fans. From the looks of him, this is a brand new visually arresting version of Toxie and we for one like it.
Blair elaborates: “The goal was to try to stay true to the vibe of Lloyd’s original Jennifer Aspinall/Mitch Cohen creature, with some influence from the Toxic Crusaders cartoon’s look, while also trying to do something new and weird and lovable with Toxie’s design. I love what Millennium FX did with it — part human, part mutant, all heart.”

“A horrible toxic accident transforms downtrodden janitor, Winston Gooze into a new evolution of hero: The Toxic Avenger.”
Take a look at the newly released images from Entertainment Weekly below, and be sure to check out their full coverage for more details. Joining Peter Dinklage will be Kevin Bacon, Elijah Wood, Jacob Tremblay, Julia Davis and Taylour Paige. This cast alone has us completely floored and we know they will deliever a film just as great as its 1980s counterpart.
The film made its debut at the 2023 Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, where it received rave reviews. While some CGI was likely used, the movie primarily relies on practical effects to bring its gruesome world to life. In a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly, Blair emphasized this approach, saying, "But it's practical effects. You can see all the goopy little boils and stuff like that." He also reassured fans that the film stays true to some of The Toxic Avenger's most iconic elements, including "the tutu that's melted onto his body and the janitor's mop as his super weapon."
