"FORBIDDEN PLANET" Is Getting The Remake Treatment From Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. has just announced that the 1956 sci-fi classic, “FORBIDDEN PLANET” will be getting a reboot and we have all the details for you about it below.

In a report from Deadline on Friday, the outlet details that writer Brian K. Vaughan (“Y: The Last Man”) is attached to write the new take on the film with Emma Watts onboard as producer.

If you’re not familiar with Brian K. Vaughan’s writing work, he has won multiple awards for his work in comic books and was the author of one of our personal favorite graphic novel series, “Y: The Last Man.” (A dystopian epic about a man and his monkey trying to live in a world where any creature with a Y chromosome has been killed off by some mystery plague .) So we think it’s safe to say that Sci-Fi and the strange are nothing new for Vaughan and we’re eager to see if he takes this new remake into a pure sci-fi epic or it will dive into more of a horror film set in space. Either way, the author will bring his “A” game for the project. Emma Watts being attached as producer is a major pull considering her work for Fox and Paramount over the years. She’s worked on past sci-fi projects like “The Martian” as well as “I’ Robot”, so she has an eye for the genre already.

For those unfamiliar with “Forbidden Planet” the film’s IMDB page gives us a very succinct and simple synopsis.

A starship crew in the 23rd century goes to investigate the silence of a distant planet's colony, only to find just two survivors, a powerful robot, and the deadly secret of a lost civilization.

WILL WE SEE MORE MODERN REMAKES OF 50S FILMS?

Forbidden Planet” is the measuring stick for sci-fi and 50s era style. When it was released in theaters, the film was the first of its kind and truly set the mark for other sci-fi films to come. When doing some research on the film, we discovered that it was the inspiration for Gene Roddenberry to create “Star Trek” and we all know how influential that franchise is now. Another area where “Forbidden Planet” sticks out is that the film has never seen a remake or reboot since its original release, now this fact alone is rare considering everything is remade in Hollywood these days, and studios are always eager to re-visit the past for new ideas.

This makes us wonder if this remake or reboot or whatever it’s being labeled, will be the jumping off point for other studios to dive into the hokey and charming era of the 50s. Think about it, we could soon get remakes of “THEM” (1954), “Invaders From Mars”(1953), or our personal favorite, “The Crawling Eye”(1958). The sky’s the limit as far as remaking these classic films with modern-day technology. Everyone always slams remakes as “never being as good or better than the original”, and yes, this is true for a majority of remakes out there but there hasn’t, as of yet, been a sc-fi/horror renaissance for the films of the 50s. The 70s and now even the 80s and 90s era films are being tapped out when it comes to remakes and we have seen what happens when studios try to revitalize old properties for modern audiences (Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, we’re looking at you.) With not so stellar reviews from both critics and fans alike.

Once the ball gets rolling and Warner Bros starts making waves with these 50s reboots, we guarantee other studios will be chomping at the bit to get rights deals and pulling deep cuts from the 50s to be remade. We’re not saying this is a bad thing as many films from the 50s could use a modern-day take and many, let’s just be real here, have been forgotten by audiences and thrown in the “my parents era of films” pile to sit with copies of “Gone with The Wind” and “All About Eve.” If this does come to pass and we see a resurgence of remakes for 50s films, you read it here first that MacabreDaily called it.

As you can see from above, “Forbidden Planet” has all the makings to be a formidable remake if done properly. There’s no official word as far as a director is concerned and it’s too early to put a release date on this one but we’re guessing it will be out in 2026 sometime so we have a while to wait and wonder. We’re sure casting news will start trickling in by years end or early 2025.
