This Friday, the “First Word on Horror” series continues with a profile of horror author and poet Laird Barron. Viewers can expect the next episode in the Substack series to dive deep into Barron and his works. Fans of his are already familiar with the brutality of his world and his characters, but where did it come from? The ominously-titled episode “Frontier Death Song” allows a glimpse into his mind.
From Barron’s childhood in Alaska, to the memories that inform his writing style, “First Word on Horror’s” latest subject is ripe for discovery. The series continues chronicling the new fiction horror renaissance, and Barron’s story is not one to miss. Check out the clip below for a preview.

Laird Barron spent his early years in Alaska. He is the author of several books, including The Beautiful Thing That Awaits Us All; The Wind Began to Howl; and Not a Speck of Light (Stories). His work has also appeared in many magazines and anthologies. Barron currently resides in the Rondout Valley writing stories about the evil that men do. He has also recently been shortlisted for this year's prestigious Bram Stoker Awards.
MATTHEW JAFFE is an artist inspired by the weird and fantastic. His first commissioned painting was the cover for Laird Barron’s anthology ‘Occultation’, and he has since gone on to provide covers for many other modern and classic horror works, including the complete Machen collection published by Hippocampus Press. His work can also be seen on various albums put out by Yuggoth Records.
