Maggie Gyllenhaal Reportedly Remaking ‘Bride of Frankenstein’ for Netflix

Renfield did a good job of taking Dracula and turning it on its head and making it a funny yet gory horror flick that we really enjoyed. It seems Netflix is looking to do almost the same thing with a remake of The Bride Of Frankenstein. Today we are hearing reports that Netflix has tapped Maggie Gyllenhaal to direct ‘THE BRIDE’ for the streamer.

As first reported by World of Reel, the news comes from Production Weekly, which cites Penelope Cruz as the Bride, Christian Bale as Frankenstein, and Peter Sarsgaard among the cast.

In the original 1935 film from director James Whale, “After recovering from injuries sustained in the mob attack upon himself and his creation, Dr. Frankenstein (Colin Clive) falls under the control of his former mentor, Dr. Pretorius (Ernest Thesiger), who insists the now-chastened doctor resume his experiments in creating new life. Meanwhile, the Monster (Boris Karloff) remains on the run from those who wish to destroy him without understanding that his intentions are generally good despite his lack of socialization and self-control.”\

There are currently no plot details provided and we’re not sure if this will fall into the comedy/horror realm Renfield did but we’ll keep you updated as we get more news.

Production Weekly notes that the film is expected to start production in early 2024, and it’s also worth noting that this is subject to change as the SAG strike is still on and may last awhile.
