We now have our first official look at Director David Cronenberg’s return to sci-fi body horror, CRIMES OF THE FUTURE, as Neon has just released an intense new teaser trailer for the new film.

CRIMES OF THE FUTURE marks the end of a long hiatus for the iconic director, whose last film was 2014’s MAPS TO THE STARS, and if the new teaser is any indication, audiences are in for a return to form for the infamous “body horror” filmmaker.

The film, which shares its namesake with another 1970 Cronenberg movie but is not a remake of it, stars Viggo Mortensen (A History of Violence, Eastern Promises), Léa Seydoux (Spectre, Blue is the Warmest Color), and Kristen Stewart (Spencer, Underwater).

The story is set in the not-too-distant-future, in a time when humankind has learned to alter their biological makeup – some naturally, some surgically. Celebrity performance artist Saul Tenser (Mortensen) and his partner Caprice (Seydoux), showcase the metamorphosis of his organs in avant-garde performances. Meanwhile, Timlin (Stewart), an investigator from the National Organ Registry, tracks their movements, revealing a mysterious group whose mission is to use Saul’s notoriety to shed light on the next phase of human evolution.

In a statement, Cronenberg said, “Crimes of the Future is a meditation on human evolution. Specifically — the ways in which we have had to take control of the process because we have created such powerful environments that did not exist previously. [...] At this critical junction in human history, one wonders — can the human body evolve to solve problems we have created? Can the human body evolve a process to digest plastics and artificial materials not only as part of a solution to the climate crisis, but also, to grow, thrive, and survive?”

The film is due to be released in June 2022 following its Cannes Film Festival premiere next month.
