Shout! Studios Acquires Gravitas Ventures And This Is Great News For Genre Fans
Chances are if you frequent this site and the many others that serve the genre film space, you’ve watched, read a review of, or even looked at a trailer for a film from either Shout! Studios and/or Gravitas Ventures. The former has been a stalwart in the physical media business for over 20 years and over time put more emphasis on original productions through their killer streaming channels, Shout! TV and Scream Factory TV respectively. Gravitas Ventures has been more on the theatrical and limited release side, and in recent years focused on the VOD distribution model to bring independent films and documentaries to the masses that often don’t get the attention of the larger Hollywood studios. But don’t let that fool you, they’ve done and continue to do plenty of genre films, some of which we’ve covered here.
As announced by Variety yesterday, Shout! Studios has acquired Gravitas Ventures for an undisclosed sum adding, “over 3,300 scripted, non-scripted, and sports-related feature films, documentaries, and television shows” to their expanding catalog. Shout! has also been investing heavily in their own originals, with such hits as “Frankie Freako,” and “Guns of Redemption,” which we covered previously. From the Variety article:
“Gravitas represents the next step in our continued expansion of the catalogue at Shout. We are excited to join forces with the Gravitas team and see several opportunities to expand distribution of the combined library,” said Garson Foos, CEO of Shout! Studios.
This new partnership will see the two companies operating as they are today, separate brands, but the combined collaboration will expand the reach that both companies have, and likely the purchasing power to acquire more films and continue investing in-house produced content. This also provides a more direct distribution model for Gravitas Ventures to bring their films to physical media, something that Shout! has excelled at while possibly forgoing the use of Studio Distribution Services Gravitas has leveraged to bring their releases to home video. It’s early days with this news, but we are excited to see these two brands come together and continue to raise the bar for genre cinema and more. The increased coverage of theatrical, streaming, and physical media can also lead to older genre films returning to cinemas (something Shout! is already doing with “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” next month.
Congrats to both Shout! Studios and Gravitas Ventures, and we can’t wait to see what you all cook up!
