VAAAL Discusses His Approach To Curating The Soundscape Of "CURSED IN BAJA" (INTERVIEW)
Sound, in particular music, is such an important part of the film-watching experience. The use and the intentional lack of sound in a film covertly curate the emotional reactions we have to the visuals we see and the dialogue that we hear. It tells us when to be scared, sad, or happy, and can immerse you as well as take you out of the film just as easily. There have been so many iconic scores in genre films from the swanky and sexy sounds of the 60s and 70s to the more synth-heavy music from the 80s now making a comeback in the modern era. What we hear is just as important as what we see in a film, and the people who create those soundscapes don’t always get the recognition they rightfully deserve.
At Macabre Daily, we love a good score, which is why we were elated to speak with VAAAL about his latest project scoring “Cursed in Baja” the new film written and directed by Jeff Daniel Phillips (see our interview). This isn’t VAAAL’s first time working in genre film as he previously did the scores for “A Wounded Fawn” and “The Knowing” and we are so grateful he took the time to speak with us about “Cursed in Baja”. We’ve included embedded links to the Spotify playlist below the interview.
