"REVENGE OF THE BOOGEYMAN (2025) Is Back For Screams With A Side Of Laughter (REVIEW)
Horror and comedy have always been strange but Breaking Glass Pictures and 7th Street Production’s new movie “Revenge of the Boogeyman” proves just how well the two can blend. Directed by Erik Skybak and written by Calvin Morie McCarthy, Chynna Rae Shurts, and Skybak himself, it is a sequel to the horror anthology “Beware the Boogeyman”. The synopsis for this story is as follows:
“A group of friends takes their recently sober friend to the remote hill to help him stay clean. But when eerie events unfold and people start disappearing, they must question whether it’s the Boogeyman or their unraveling minds.”
“Revenge of the Boogeyman” is a wild mix of genuine horror and campy, self-aware fun. It embraces the classic fear of the Boogeyman while injecting a playful energy that makes it as entertaining as it is terrifying. With fantastic bloody/gory practical effects, a dark yet humorous tone, and stellar performances from a cast that clearly understands the assignment, “Revenge of the Boogeyman” delivers a horror experience that’s both chilling and wildly enjoyable.
The story follows a group of friends who retreat to a secluded location, only to find themselves stalked by a force they struggle to comprehend. The Boogeyman isn’t just a myth in this world; it’s a gleefully malevolent force that delights in toying with its victims. What sets “Revenge of the Boogeyman” apart from other campy horror movies is its balance between genuine terror and tongue-in-cheek humor. It knows when to be scary, but it also knows when to let loose and have fun with its ability to pivot from extreme gore to hilarious punchlines. “Revenge of the Boogeyman” plays with classic horror tropes such as characters making bad decisions, over-the-top scares, and eerie foreshadowing. It does so with a wink, acknowledging the absurdity while still delivering real tension each time the Boogeyman is on screen about to strike.

The humor doesn’t undercut the horror, it enhances it by not sacrificing either the gore or jokes to make either one more effective. When the tension reaches unbearable levels, a perfectly timed joke or outrageously bloody kill breaks the anxiety. It does so gracefully by allowing the audience to laugh before being pulled back into the nightmare that the fear of the Boogeyman. This push-and-pull between terror and comedy makes the film feel exhilarating and unpredictable with the awkward silence of fright being broken by a very funny anecdote from one of the main characters.
A movie like “Revenge of the Boogeyman” demands actors who can navigate both horror and comedy, and the cast does so effortlessly. Calvin Morie McCarthy delivers a fantastic performance with his character, balancing sobriety with insane ways to get high. He also does well with the intensity of the situation from the eerie things he is hearing in the woods with a creeping suspicion of just how insane things are going to become. Jax Kellington brings a charismatic energy to the movie, effortlessly moving between moments of genuine fear and comedic bravado while being oblivious to the terror about to become. Tim Coyle rounds out the movie with performances that make their characters feel both real and exaggerated in the best way possible, as well as playing off his girlfriend (portrayed by Jax Kellington) in a way that makes them a believable couple. The cast plays their characters well by reacting to their situation with the kind of mix of terror and sarcasm that feels refreshingly human. They’re scared, but they’re also cracking jokes, swearing at the Boogeyman, and making the kind of last-minute declarations that are doomed to blow up in their faces in hilariously spectacular fashion.

One of the highlights of “Revenge of the Boogeyman” is its dedication to practical effects and gore. It's gruesome, over-the-top, and dripping with old-school horror charm each time you see a death on screen. Rather than relying on CGI, the “Revenge of the Boogeyman” revels in blood splatters, practical creature work, and gloriously messy kills that feel straight out of a ‘90s horror-comedy filled with arm rips and gooey head stomps. Fans of movies like “Evil Dead II” and “The Return of the Living Dead” will appreciate the way “Revenge of the Boogeyman” leans into the fun of practical effects while still delivering genuine horror.
The cinematography perfectly matches the tone of the film, using shadow-heavy visuals and eerie lighting to create an oppressive, dread-filled environment when going from light scenes to more horror-filled ones. The dark, moody aesthetic ensures that the horror elements land effectively, while clever framing and lighting shifts allow for comedic beats to hit just as hard. One of the most creative Iways the cinematography shines is when it shifts from moments in the daytime when the main characters are trying to enjoy themselves (or some trying to stay sober) to when night falls and a green light that washes over the night to reveal The Boogeyman.

“Revenge of the Boogeyman” is filled with humor, but never feels like it’s making fun of horror. It feels like it’s celebrating everything that makes the genre great. It knows that horror fans love both the scares and the camp, and it delivers both in equal measure. Clearly, the cast and crew are horror fans themselves, and they are making sure not to drag down the genre but build it up.
“Revenge of the Boogeyman” is triumphant with balancing horror and comedy, delivering both genuine scares and laugh-out-loud moments. With impressive performances, brilliantly executed practical effects, and a dark but playful atmosphere, it stands as a testament to how much fun horror movies can be when they fully embrace both their fear and their absurdity. It knows how to have fun while still bringing the scares, this is a must-watch. Whether you’re here for the Boogeyman’s terrifying presence or the delightfully gruesome chaos that follows, you won’t be disappointed.
