"AZRAEL" Pits Samara Weaving Against Apocalyptic Cults And Creatures (TRAILER)

Trends in horror are like anything else in pop culture in that they always have a way of coming back around. Much like the rise of dystopian apocalyptic films in the 80s due to the popularity of “The Road Warrior”, we are currently seeing a rehash of those same themes albeit more focused on the familial and personal aspects of the end of the world. Films like “A Quiet Place” and more recently “Arcadian” are just a few examples of how this is playing out today, which is what makes the trailer for IFC Films and Shudder’s “Azrael” so compelling!

Directed by E.L. Katz and starring modern-day scream queen Samara Weaving, “Azrael” looks to be a welcome diversion from the standard family-against-creatures motif we have seen in post-apocalyptic cinema these days. Weaving plays the titular role of Azrael who has been kidnapped by a cult of zealots, but that’s not her only problem. In this dark, dystopian world there are also creatures lurking which the trailer skillfully shows in brief. Check out the trailer below, and be prepared to check out “Azrael” when it hits theaters on September 27, 2024, with a Shudder streaming date to follow.

Synopsis

Many years following the apocalypse, a devout cult of mute zealots hunts down Azrael (Samara Weaving), a young woman who escaped her own imprisonment- and she will stop at nothing to ensure her own survival.
