David Gordon Green Exorcised From THE EXORCIST: DECEIVER; Film Completely Removed From Release Calendar

Well this is some interesting news indeed. David Gordon Green’s THE EXORCIST BELIEVER was always set up to be the first film in a three picture franchise reboot. That’s what we were told, that’s what we told you fine fiends. This was no small deal either as Blumhouse and Universal Pictures threw down $400 million for the planned franchise and the second film, THE EXORCIST: DECEIVER, was set for a April 18th, 2025 release. As of today, those plans have been put on hold.

THR reports this afternoon that David Gordon Green will no longer be directing The Exorcist: Deceiver, and that Universal and Blumhouse are actively seeking a new director.

According to the site, Gordon Green is exiting The Exorcist: Deceiver as director because he’s busy working on feature film Nutcrackers and TV series “The Righteous Gemstones.”

Now there’s more here than is being let on. ‘The Exorcist: Believer’ was set to reboot The Exorcist franchise but was totally panned by fans and flopped big time at the box office. One would think because Gordon Green did so well with the Halloween franchise for Blumhouse, that The Exorcist would work out just fine. Nope, the devil is a completely different beast.

This leaves us with a few questions: Where does this leave the planned franchise? Who will be the director brave enough to jump into a sinking ship of a film?

The first film in the trilogy was released theatrically on October 13, 2023, with Leslie Odom Jr. starring alongside a returning Ellen Burstyn from the original classic.

In Believer, “Since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, Victor Fielding (Leslie Odom, Jr.) has raised their daughter Angela (Lidya Jewett) on his own.

“But when Angela and her friend Katherine (Olivia Marcum) disappear in the woods, only to return three days later with no memory of what happened to them, it unleashes a chain of events that will force Victor to confront the nadir of evil and, in his terror and desperation, seek out the only person alive who has witnessed anything like it before.”

The final moments of The Exorcist: Believer brought Linda Blair’s Regan MacNeil back into the fold, seeming to suggest that the legacy character could return in future installments. Now the whole thing is up in the air like a possessed little girl.

We’ll keep ya posted on what happens next.
