THE CHANGELING | 1980
Bouncing red balls, wheelchairs, and George C. Scott. No, this is not some weird cinephile fetish description, but rather three hallmarks of one of the best supernatural ghost stories ever committed to film. While the back half of the film is a bit uneven, this is still one of the best-made ghost movies out there and an absolute classic with some bone-chilling twists that are still effective even today!
ALL THE HAUNTS BE OURS: A COMPENDIUM OF FOLK HORROR | 2022
SEVERIN box sets are as beautiful as they are comprehensive, and this most recent set is hands down their magnum opus (IMO). This set includes so many hidden gems of folk horror that span the entire globe. Seldom are horror fans treated to such a global representation of horror films, and it even includes the outstanding documentary WOODLANDS DARK AND DAYS BEWITCHED
WOODLANDS DARK AND DAYS BEWITCHED: A HISTORY OF FOLK HORROR | 2022
If money is tight and you can’t swing the amazing box set above, you should absolutely not miss this epic documentary from KIER-LA JANISSE. It is expansive in covering the history of folk horror across the globe. These kinds of documentaries are endlessly enjoyable, and this one is densely packed with lots of great suggestions of films to seek out. I cannot recommend this enough for your collections, and at a great price!
SANTA SANGRE 4K UHD | 1989

Hands down, a top 3 release from SEVERIN. ALEJANDRO JODOROWSKY’S oddly charming and strange tale of a circus performer's tragic life is a vibrant and engrossing cinematic experience. There isn’t much more to say about this than what we already wrote in our review, and this is a set that is both brimming with special features and presented in a beautiful package!
AENIGMA | 1987
LUCIO FULCI has a vast filmography that covers multiple genres, but most horror fans know him from his classic THE BEYOND and ZOMBIE. Like so many Italian film maestros, some of his films get lost in the shuffle and for a long time, AENIGMA was one of them. This is a guilty pleasure Fulci film, and while not as strong as some of his most famous work, it certainly is entertaining and audacious. You’ll never look at snails the same way again…
SIEGE | 1983
I’d say my blind buy batting average is probably around .200. For you non-baseball fans out there, that is pretty good, but not great. When I picked up SIEGE when SEVERIN first released it I had no idea it would become one of my favorite blind buys of all time! This nasty Canadian ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 meets an apartment building is not only supremely entertaining, but it’s also extremely well-made. What looks like an average exploitation film is actually much more with characters that you genuinely are rooting for and villains who live up to that title in spades.
REVENGE OF THE LIVING DEAD GIRLS | 1987
This French softcore horror oddity is as dumbfounding as it is entertaining. Hard to describe this film aside from the fact that it is in a league of its own, and is one of the hallmarks of French gore flicks. If you enjoy the odder side of horror and find yourself buying most Vinegar Syndrome releases, you’re sure to enjoy this one too!
BEYOND THE DARKNESS (BUIO OMEGA) | 1979

There are not many films that can truly gross you out, and BEYOND THE DARKNESS might just be one of them. While not as depraved as infamous films like A SERBIAN FILM or more recently THE SADNESS (read our review of that here), there are some gross-out moments in this JOE D’AMATO’s that certainly laid a foundation for the gore and shock that those later films would deliver. A strange story, at least outside of the Italian horror context, with a killer soundtrack, are just a couple of additional selling points as to why this should be a part of your growing collection.
ANTHROPOPHAGOUS | 1980
JOE D’AMATO is the only director to appear on this list twice, and for a damn good reason! ANTHROPOPHAGOUS is just as grizzly as BEYOND THE DARKNESS, but somehow more cohesive in its storytelling. More slasher film than anything else, this gory romp in Greece is a prime example of how creative and graphic the peak of Italian horror really was coming out of the 1970s. Hell, JOE BOB BRIGGS recently programmed this during the most recent THE LAST DRIVE-IN season on SHUDDER. What more praise do you need?!
ALL THE COLORS OF GIALLO | 2019
SEVERIN has low-key become one of the best genre documentary producers out there. Between their most recent folk horror doc (see the top of this list) and their anthology doc, TALES OF THE UNCANNY, and more they have slowly built up a library of rich and thoughtful films focused on some of our favorite sub-genres. If you fancy yourself a Giallo fan, you absolutely must grab ALL THE COLORS OF GIALLO. This documentary provides in-depth interviews and heaps of classic Giallo trailers that should satisfy your hunger for crime stories and black-gloved killers.
