'ORGAN TRAIL' (2023) Review: A Bloody Good Tale Of Revenge

As a Horror-Western film enthusiast, one aspect that usually falls flat for me is that the film itself tends to have a slow burn. Thankfully, that is not the case with Organ Trail. Within the first 20 minutes, we’re thrown into a whirlwind of slaughter, anguish, and defeat. Paramount Movies was kind enough to give MacabreDaily a first look at the film.

Set in the 1870s, Abigale Archer (Zoé De Grand Maison) and her family are braving the treacherous Montana winter along the Oregon Trail. After stumbling upon the aftermath of a rural massacre, Abigale’s brother and father find a woman barely alive that has had her hands crucified to planks with arrows and they decide to take her back to their campsite. They ultimately get caught in the path of bloodthirsty bandits who are in search of one of their own. Abigale becomes the lone survivor after her family was brutally murdered during the night and is taken along with Cassidy (Olivia Grace Applegate) the woman who was rescued from the battlefield. Little do they know, Abigale will do whatever it takes to get back the last of what family she has left, her loyal steed.

Director Michael Patrick Jann and the film’s writer Meg Turner work hand in hand to bring us along a stunning cinematic journey. Speaking of stunning, the cinematography in this film was absolutely breathtaking and ultimately one of my favorite aspects of Organ Trail. Snowcapped arid landscapes immerse you in all of the beauty that Montana has to offer, along with the occasional blood-soaked plains.

I also wanted to highlight the acting in this film. With likenesses such as Sam Trammell (True Blood), Nicholas Logan (I Care A Lot), Alejandro Akara (The Mosquito Coast), and Michael Abbott Jr. (The Dark and the Wicked) who go above and beyond with their characters portraying murderous cowboys who you can’t help but despise (except maybe one.) We also have Clé Bennett (Jigsaw) and Jessica Frances Dukes (Ozark) that act as our “saving graces” in which we were desperately longing for in certain scenes.

Overall, Organ Trail left me with a feeling of satisfaction and triumph after watching it which you don’t get with many horror flicks nowadays, or any genre for that matter. Hopefully, this has piqued your interest because Organ Trail will be available for digital purchase on May 12th, 2023.

Giddy up, you’re in for a wild ride.
