Sony Pictures Unleashes New "28 YEARS LATER" (2025) Details at CinemaCon

Sony Pictures dropped some fresh details about “28 Years Later” at CinemaCon last night, and we've got all the latest updates for you below.

Fans have been buzzing with anticipation over the return of director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland to the “28 Days Later” franchise with the upcoming film “28 Years Later.” During CinemaCon last night, Sony Pictures unveiled new details about this highly awaited sequel and its follow-up which has us eager for more.

While we’re still waiting (im)patiently for the footage to drop online, Sony gave lucky CinemaCon attendees a sneak peek at the madness to come with a brand-new trailer for “28 Years Later”, set to hit theaters on June 20, 2025. And if that wasn’t enough to make your infected little heart race, Sony also confirmed what fans had been hoping for—this isn’t just a one-and-done sequel. “28 Years Later” is officially the first installment in a full-blown trilogy that will expand the apocalyptic world Danny Boyle and Alex Garland first unleashed upon us back in 2002.

Next up? “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” (yes, that’s the real title, and yes, we’re already obsessed). This time around, the directorial reins will be handed over to Nia DaCosta, who’s no stranger to horror, having helmed 2021’s Candyman. If this keeps up, we might just have to start preparing for 28 Decades Later down the road—though at that point, we’ll probably be the infected ones. The sequel by Dacosta has been given a January 16, 2026 release date. This news places “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” in theaters six months later, and from what we have read, the third installment will follow suit, but that all depends on the popularity and box office numbers for the first two films. We have no news on the title for the third film, sadly.

Our friends over at Bloody Disgusting were able to get a few new images from the film and you can check those out below.

WATCH THE TRAILER FOR “28 YEARS LATER” BELOW

It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.

With a cast this stacked, “28 Years Later” is shaping up to be an absolute nightmare in the best possible way. Jack O’Connell (Amy Winehouse: Back to Black), Jodie Comer (Alone in the Dark, Killing Eve), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kraven the Hunter), Alfie Williams (His Dark Materials), and the always-commanding Ralph Fiennes (The Menu) are all set to bring the terror to life. What about Cillian Murphy, you may ask? He is indeed in the trilogy, but we’ll have to wait to see him as Danny Boyle has teased that we won’t see him as Jim too soon in the next three film arcs, so fans will have to wait a bit for our boys’ triumphant return. With such powerhouse talent, a visionary creative team, and the promise of a full trilogy, it looks like the rage virus isn’t the only thing coming back stronger than ever.

We’ll keep you posted on all things 28 Years Later as usual.
