"BARBARIAN" (2022) Director Zach Cregger Gives Update On New "RESIDENT EVIL" (2026) Reboot
Director Zach Cregger has shared an exciting update on his upcoming take on “Resident Evil” for Sony, assuring fans that the franchise will be returning to its true horror roots. If you’ve been craving the eerie, tension-filled atmosphere of the classic games, this might just be the adaptation we’ve been waiting for. All the details and more below!
CinemaCon is in full swing, and last night, Sony Pictures came out swinging with fresh details about Zach Cregger’s “Resident Evil” reboot. Given that this marks the eighth time the franchise has been adapted for the big screen, it's fair to approach it with some skepticism. However, Cregger is making bold promises, assuring fans that this film will be “unlike any of the previous films,” according to a report from our friends at IGN, who were there to witness it firsthand.
The film is set for a September 18th, 2026 release, which gives the director plenty of time to dial up the terror and horror elements to eleven, just the way we like them. Cregger tells fans via IGN that “My movie will be built in the spirit of those games and follows one central protagonist from point A to point B, as they descend deeper into hell.”
A previous report from The Hollywood Reporter also detailed that “sources say the new project is decidedly on the horror track. It is also said to have elements of a wilderness survival thriller.”
Cregger’s “Resident Evil” is set to begin filming this summer in Europe, with Austin Abrams (Euphoria) reportedly landing the lead role. While no other casting details have been revealed yet, we’re sure that as the months drag on—much like a relentless horde of the undead—more news will shuffle its way to eager fans.
The last time Resident Evil hit the big screen was in 2021 with “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.” Despite its modest $25 million budget, the film managed to pull in $41.9 million worldwide—respectable, but not enough to justify a sequel. Any hopes of continuing that particular adaptation have been left to rot, meaning all eyes are on Cregger to deliver something fresh, terrifying, and worthy of the franchise’s legacy. No pressure, right?
We’ll bring you more on “RESIDENT EVIL” as we get it.
