INDIE SPOTLIGHT: "GRISLY GIRLS"
Skull Globe Productions is making waves on the indie circuit with their new short film “Grisly Girls.” Written, directed, and edited by queer horror filmmaker Adam Van Dyke. Having cut his teeth as a production assistant on several major mainstream films and tv shows, Van Dyke’s latest short is a bloody slice of stylish glee released this past Valentine’s Day. I asked Van Dyke about the making of “Grisly Girls,” which you can check out below, along with the full short.
How did Skull Globe Productions start?
Skull Globe started as a young horror fanatics dream production company. Fifteen years later that dream has become a reality - pushing out new and fun horror shorts made with incredible friends!
What were your influences on “Grisly Girls?”
I was very much inspired by "The Strangers: Prey at Night" and the "Saw" franchise. As a queer horror filmmaker, I wanted to tell a simple, yet powerful story about women taking back something that was stolen from them (what would the killers behind the masks be if you truly knew their goal?) set up as a slasher/home invasion turned women-avenge thriller.
What was the most challenging part of the shoot and how was it overcome?
Absolutely the most challenging part of the shoot was the 'penis removal gag'. My team and I have always done everything practical(for many reasons) and this one was a first. We were only able to test out the gag once before shooting and only had ONE opportunity to get it right. In the end...i'm pretty thrilled with how it turned out. It's grisly yet campy.
What advice would you give to other aspiring Production Assistants who want to get their foot in the door of filmmaking?
We all know how hard it is to get started (foot in any door). My best advice is work ethic and be loyal to the people you like to work with. Any job is a learning experience, take every bit of it in!
What’s next for you after “Grisly Girls?” Any hopes for a feature?
For now the goal is to get “Grisly Girls” seen by as many as possible. With a push for a Youtube Valentine’s release I want this film to be one horror fans and short film lovers alike recommend to their colleagues and friends for a good time. Hopefully in the next couple years the Grisly Girls will be back for another short with more back story or even a possible feature. Who knows?!
