WHAT TO BUY DURING MVD'S EXTREME HORROR SALE!

Extreme horror is one of the most acquired tastes in the entire horror genre. Many of these films are independently financed and tend to be made on smaller budgets with most of the funds going into creating some of the nastiest and goriest scenes the genre has to offer. A SERBIAN FILM (2010)

Probably the most infamous film on this list and a film that is the epitome of taboo meets extreme horror. One of the most transgressive films made during my lifetime and the kind of movie you may be embarrassed to tell other people you have seen. I’ll admit, this is not a movie that I really enjoy and I’m quite sure the point of the film is not to entertain. Like many films in the extreme horror category, their main purpose is to provoke and push the boundaries of acceptability in celluloid. This is not intended to rob the film of its merit, as it is definitely something you will never forget and the semi-political reasons for the film's existence are somewhat admirable even if the content produced is anything but. While all of this may not sound like a resounding recommendation, A SERBIAN FILM is not without merit and is successful in really making you feel something as each scene seems to double down on the disgust factor as the runtime rolls on…if you can stomach it.

FRANCESCA (2015)

Having just watched this movie for the first time I can safely say that this is the best Giallo I’ve seen since the 90s. Everything from the sounds, camerawork, and storyline are all tightly aligned to feign the experience that this film is not only much older but made with the same aesthetic deployed over 40 years ago at the peak of the genre’s heyday. The story will be immediately familiar to anyone who’s seen at least a few Giallo films, and at a brisk 77-minutes, this one avoids the common pitfall amongst so many of the genre staples by telling a concise story that moves at a slasher films pace. I cannot recommend this film enough, and those that are a bit squeamish with extreme horror should not shy away as this is probably the least offensive film on this list.

PURGATORY ROAD (2017)

One of the common tropes in extreme horror is taking something pedestrian and corrupting it in perverse ways. In that sense, ROB ZOMBIE’s films about the Firefly family and 31 are probably the closest examples of mainstream horror dipping its toes on the extreme side of the pond. In PURGATORY ROAD, a pair of brothers (one is a priest) travel in a mobile confessional murdering people who steal as a penance for a crime committed by their father until a serial killer begins to infiltrate their operation causing a rift between the brothers to blow wide open. If you’re able to bear with some silliness in the premise and suspend your disbelief enough to forget that a lot of characters are sloppy criminals who would most likely be caught by now then there is quite a bit to enjoy here. Not near as violent or gory as other films on this list, but also not afraid to spill some blood when necessary PURGATORY ROAD delivers a lighter and more approachable side of extreme horror fare.

EVIL DEAD TRAP (1988)

Of all the movies on this list, this is the one I want as many people as possible to see…especially if you loved JAMES WAN’s MALIGNANT. The argument could be made that Wan lifted a hefty chunk of MALIGNANT’s story from EVIL DEAD TRAP and was banking on the relative obscurity, alongside limited access to the film to mask his efforts in drawing comparisons. Well, the fine folks at UNEARTHED FILMS release EVIL DEAD TRAP last August just a few months after Wan debuted his film on HBO MAX. Not everything about this movie was used in MALIGNANT, but enough was that it doesn’t take much time to start to see the similarities. That said, the best way to describe EVIL DEAD TRAP is it is an extreme supernatural J-Horror film that feels like it was filmed by Argento and written by Fulci. It’s gooey, original, and highly entertaining.

THE SONG OF SOLOMON (2017)

Have you ever wondered what a gorier version of THE EXORCIST might look like? If you answered “yes”, then THE SONG OF SOLOMON is the movie for you. A US spin-off under the moniker of American Guinea Pig has been putting out films that are spiritually similar to the original Japanese film series titled, Guinea Pig. These films are known for their hyper-stylized violence and sexuality which despite their modest budgets look even more realistic than their better-funded Hollywood counterparts. THE SONG OF SOLOMON really is just a version of THE EXORCIST with heaps of gore, sex, and depravity added onto the already taboo tale of a young girl who is demonically possessed. Of all the American Guinea Pig films I’ve seen this is probably one of the tamest, which when compared to most other horror films is a wide margin of difference. Great production value is the foundation for this entertaining re-telling that is sure to appease fans of ultra-violence and religious horror.

THE UNTOLD STORY (1993)

Full disclosure, I need to rewatch this one. Do you know how sometimes there are movies that for whatever reason you get distracted each time you’re watching? That was THE UNTOLD STORY for me. Every time I tried to watch it something seemed to come up that drew my attention away from it causing me to have to stop and start over again. Finally, about 6 months ago I got a chance to sit down and watch this with minimal distraction. If you like extreme Asian horror then THE UNTOLD STORY is the film you’ve been looking for. Loosely based on actual murders that happened in Macau, this is about the owner of a pork bao shop who has a secret ingredient in his meat. The farmer Vincent of China if you will, this film pushes loads of boundaries and walks the line of absurdity waffling between humorous and horrific. I remember enjoying what I saw when I saw it, but have been meaning to go back and revisit it with less distraction.

AMERICAN GUINEA PIG: BLOODSHOCK (2015)

Okay, so this is one I haven’t seen yet, but I do own it. So I’m basically adding this to the list as a means to remind myself that I need to get to this one sooner rather than later. For now, here’s the plot synopsis and if it sounds like your cup of tea, then bring on the sugar and milk!

Synopsis: A man is imprisoned by a psychotic doctor who tortures him in increasingly gruesome ways in order to extract chemicals from his bloodstream. Along the way, he develops a relationship with a female prisoner.
