FANTASTIC FEST 2024: Corey Feldman and Eugenio Mira Talk About Their Revitalized Cult Classic, "THE BIRTHDAY" (INTERVIEW)
Fantastic Fest isn't just a celebration of new and future films, but also a recognition of the films that have made the genre what it is today. Some of these films are well-regarded and accessible, whereas some of these films get lost in the sea of film festivals seeking distribution. While streaming services and online platforms have made getting your work out there easier, in 2004 that wasn’t the case. YouTube was just starting to catch on in the mainstream but has become a creator’s paradise like it is now. And streaming services like Netflix hadn’t even started online streaming yet and were only sending DVDs in the mail. This was the same year that “The Birthday”, the debut film from Eugenio Mira starring Corey Feldman was released at Sitges before disappearing…until now!
Thanks to the folks at Drafthouse Films, “The Birthday” has received a brand new 4K restoration that premiered at this year’s Fantastic Fest in Austin. We had a chance to catch up with Eugenio and Corey in Austin and chat about what it feels like to have a film from 20 years ago finally get its day in the sun!
