Original BLAIR WITCH PROJECT Cast Speaks About The Independent Struggle
Independent filmmaking is a tough endeavor, and the hopes of not only getting noticed but getting paid can be rare. The horror genre as a whole owes a lot to indie filmmakers as many get their start in the genre and in turn, we viewers have a plethora of content to comb through. The assumptions of the viewing public are that filmmakers and actors are taken care of when things go well, but more and more it seems that’s not the case. We’ve reported on the cast’s displeasure and treatment before, and now Variety has written up an essential article on the trio and how exactly indie filmmakers lose even when a project is a hit. From the article:
“Even as “Blair Witch” earned $248 million worldwide, the movie’s once-in-a-generation popularity began to feel more like a chokehold. Through online abuse and humiliation, career changes and lawsuits, it’s taken a quarter century for Donahue, Williams and Leonard to loosen the bruising grip of “Blair Witch” on their lives. But they’ve never quite felt free of it.“
This is a must-read article, and we hope that the cast is finally getting the recognition and reward they deserve!
