CRAVE – Find Out What You Crave In The New Year.
Image Comics and Maria Llovet (Eros/Psyche, Luna, and Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country and Thessaly) takes you into an elite university campus where the students have become obsessed with a new mysterious app called Crave. Crave promises to make their desires come true, provided they follow its esoteric, and often outlandish instructions. Naturally the students use it as a hookup app.
Described as Black Mirror meets Eyes Wide Shut, the main character David is enticed into Crave’s games of seduction and manipulation when he sees it as a chance to be with the unattainable Alexandra. However as the app’s requests across the campus drive a spiralling chaos, David and his friends become determined to find out what really is behind the app.
This six-issue miniseries looks intriguing, especially once you look past the obvious psycho/sexual titillation. Very much appearing to have an initial plotting somewhere between “Be careful what you wish for” and “If something looks too good to be true, it probably is.” Crave looks like to have a lot of potentially excitement with an intriguing, light-science fiction, mystery provided it can stick the landing.
With the experience of its writer/artist, Maria Llovet, there is a reasonable expectation that the series will not disappoint. Especially since semi-erotic, psycho/sexual, social/interpersonal commentary are all pretty regular themes through most of her work, and they all are considered well written and realised.
Crave #1 is being released on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, and looks like it could be a good start your reading for the year. It is also available across many digital platforms, including Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, and Google Play.
