Everything We Know About The 'Head Full of Ghosts' Adaptation, Robert Downey Jr. To Produce
An adaptation of Paul Tremblay’s Bram Stoker Award-Winning novel, “A Head Full of Ghosts” is in the works with Robert Downey Jr. to produce. The film will be directed and adapted by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala. This duo is best known for the 2019 film from NEON, “The Lodge”. Team Downey will partner with The Allegiance Theater and Fifth Season for production and development.
Tremblay’s popular novel is an experimental work toying with the familiar “exorcism” trope.
The Barretts are experiencing financial hardship and struggling with their oldest daughter displaying signs of extreme mental illness. In desperation, they agree to be the subject of the reality show, “The Possession”. 15 years later, the youngest daughter, Merry, recounts her experience after the traumatic incidents of her childhood were documented for the world to see. Told through online discussion thread transcripts and interviews, this haunted house story highlights important conversations of mental health and the exploitation of the television industry. Tremblay has crafted a truly bone chilling work of fiction that begs to be on the big screen.
More recently, Tremblay’s “Cabin at the End of the World” was adapted by M. Night Shyamalan. This 2023 film, “A Knock at the Cabin”, was met with mixed reviews despite the star studded cast and acclaimed director. Although “A Head Full of Ghosts” has been picked up for adaptation twice previously, Tremblay stated in his most recent instagram post, “Maybe third time . . . is the charm? Fingers crossed!”
Production is set to begin later this year. Although a cast has not been announced yet, I am anxious to get more information on this highly anticipated adaptation.
