George A. Romero's Unmade 'RESIDENT EVIL' Film Getting A Documentary
To clear things up right off the bat, George A. Romero (Night Of The Living Dead, Dawn Of The Dead) did indeed direct and shot a Resident Evil commercial for RE2 back in the early 90s. Yes it only saw the light of day in Japan but it gave many hope for a Romero helmed Resident Evil film, sadly, that never occurred. Now thanks to Jason Bareford (George’s Production Assistant) and director Brandon Salisbury, we’ll finally be getting George A. Romero’s Resident Evil, a long-overdue documentary on the film that could’ve been.
Per Dawn of the Discs on Twitter, images were snapped of the upcoming documentary about Romero’s never-filmed Resident Evil project, which was revealed during the recent Creature Feature Weekend in Gettysburg, PA. In an interview with The Resident Evil Podcast, Salisbury stated that he wanted to pay homage to Romero’s style and the game itself with George A. Romero’s Resident Evil, which is currently scheduled for a 2024 release. As a result, the documentary takes place in a mansion that echoes the look of Resident Evil‘s Spencer Mansion, and is shot to mimic Romero’s style.
For those unaware, Romero pitched a script for a Resident Evil flick that was gory(naturally) and strayed from the source material a bit. Capcom didn’t dig it and thus it was shelved back in 1998 and we got the Paul W.S. Anderson version that eventually came out later. Romero’s script however was leaked online and fans always wanted to see what the master mind behind the zombie genre could bring to the table.
At least we will have this documentary to see and will be left with that burning question afterwards…what if?
