7 FILMS TO ADD TO YOUR COLLECTION DURING THE MVD / SYNAPSE SUMMER SALE

Considering the economic situation at hand, I think we can all appreciate a good sale. With inflation rising across the board, how are collectors supposed to maintain their library of movies with the cost of damn near everything going up?! And let me tell you my horror brothers and sisters, these companies are coming for our wallets more aggressively than ever. While I don’t believe you can’t have too much of a good thing, you do have to be able to bankroll it. So when a sale comes around, you have my attention. The lovely teams over at MVD ENTERTAINMENT have put together a killer sale on some of the SYNAPSE FILMS catalog!

STREET TRASH (1987)

LINK TO BUY

STREET TRASH is a bonafide exploitation classic that dares to ask the question, “what happens if you drink 40+-year-old liquor?” Turns out the answer is you become a complete sopping mess of a melted person. This fun and over-the-top gorefest will surely please those of you who prefer your cinema dripping with depravity. This edition from SYNAPSE has a great A/V transfer and a solid roster of special features. For the sale price, this is a must-have for those who don’t currently have this in their collection.

CURTAINS (1983)

LINK TO BUY

CURTAINS just might be one of the best slashers that people don’t talk enough about. This Canadian killer flick came out near the end of the slasher craze in the 80s and was a video store staple based on its creepy cover art. The story is closer to a Giallo than a slasher, but it has some hallmarks of great slashers like an original (and eerie) mask and some great death scenes. The ending is a lot of fun even to this day and holds up quite well despite the film coming out almost 40 years ago…fuck, I feel old. Anyway, this is a slasher film you need to have on your shelf and then you can tell all your friends you showed them something they maybe haven’t seen before!

FRANKENHOOKER (1990)

LINK TO BUY

One of FRANK HENENLOTTER’S best films, and easily one of the funniest. This horror-comedy takes the MARY SHELLEY tale and waterboards it in 42nd Street grime and NYC lights. The laughs come from a mixture of physical comedy and dark satire, and all of it is somehow surprisingly sweet as well. Henelotter doubles down on his brand of sexual humor, which should be quite clear given the title of the film, and adds some fun twists to the old story by combing elements of RE-ANIMATOR as well. All in all, this is a classic that every genre fan should own and this is a great time to grab it!

MASSACRE AT CENTRAL HIGH (1976)

LINK TO BUY

Of all the films on this list, it’s hard to pick a favorite. This isn’t my favorite, but it is definitely in contention and it’s surely a movie you have either never heard of or only sparsely. The best way to describe it would be like if CLASS OF 1984 and an after-school special on bullying had a love child that they let DEATH WISH 2 raise. It’s a movie that is at times heartfelt, sleazy, and hilarious…sometimes all at the same time. It’s best to go into this blind but know that it is a film you will not soon forget that tackles issues still relevant today. Considering the recent events of the past few weeks, MASSACRE AT CENTRAL HIGH feels almost like an eerie foretelling of some of our society's most tragic problems.

POPCORN (1991)

LINK TO BUY

Okay, this is my second favorite movie on this list. One that I discovered at the video store and have never forgotten to this day. When SYNAPSE announced a special edition steelbook a couple of years back I was elated, to say the least. While it’s a relatively by-the-numbers slasher in some ways, it shares a lot in common with MICHELE SOAVI’s STAGE FRIGHT if it merged with PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and FADE TO BLACK. It’s a lot of fun and has some great gore gags along the way, so if you fancy yourself a slasher connoisseur you should consider grabbing this now!

SUSPIRIA 4K UHD (1977)

LINK TO BUY

This is unquestionably my favorite movie on this list, and in my top 5 of all time. I have written about how wonderful this transfer is before, from the visuals to the DOLBY ATMOS track this is the benchmark for 4K restorations. Don’t sleep on this price, as this is one of the greatest movies ever made and I will fight anyone and their father to prove it.

DEMONS I & II 4K UHD (1985 & 1986)

LINK TO BUY

I will openly admit that I currently own two copies of each of these movies in similar formats. One is the ARROW VIDEO 4K UHD release, and the other is this one from SYNAPSE. Overall, both offerings are stellar and this one just happens to be priced at a great point during this sale. I’m hard-pressed to think of any other movie about demons that is as good or as entertaining as these two are, but I’m open to other opinions even if they are wrong. Interestingly enough, DEMONS and POPCORN would make a great double-feature and even more meta if you watched them both in an actual theater!
