THE CABINET, From Image Comics – A Lot Of Influences On Display
Releasing in February 2024, The Cabinet, is promising to be a technicolor-drenched, tongue-in-cheek adventure. Written by Jordan Hart and David Ebeltoft, with art by Chiara Raimondi, this five-issue miniseries is part of Image Comics’ Syzygy line.
Described as Lumberjanes meets Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and Constantine with Clarissa Explains It All through a Lisa Frank-esque lens, it is more than a little concerning how heavily they want to openly attribute so many references.
The Cabinet follows an Indian-American teen, Avani, who made a mistake when she tapped into the arcane powers of a resplendent 17th-century cabinet. So now her and Trent, a midwestern jock, must embark on a teleporting mission across a post-Cold War landscape to collect bizarre relics to activate the cabinet again.
Jordan Hart and David Ebeltoft have tried to veer away from the current trend of grim-dark fantasy and supernatural trends. Ebeltoft has stated “Jordan and I, while cooking up The Cabinet, had an underlying rule for our occult and character-driven adventure—always have fun. And that’s what we did. Even when Avani, our heroine, comes face to face with uber-dark moments and calamitous escapades, our emotional meter never dips into depressing. It swings dramatic for sure, but that just makes the levity before and after those tense moments more rewarding… for us at least… hopefully for y’all too.”
The current preview pages available are interesting, if all together too mysterious to get any solid impressions. But there does appear to be a lot of passion being put in by the creative team.
The Cabinet #1 will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, and will also be available across many digital platforms, including Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, and Google Play.
