"THE EXORCIST: BELIEVER" SCARES UP $27.2M DURING OPENING WEEKEND

Love it or hate it, THE EXORCIST: BELIEVER was released to a mediocre reception this past weekend. While many decry the use of the franchise and seemingly lackluster attribution to the prior material, others have been joining a minority of viewers ardently defending the film and the new trilogy that UNIVERSAL PICTURES and BLUMHOUSE have planned.

According to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, “The Exorcist: Believer had no trouble delivering a first-place finish at the weekend box office with an estimated $27.2 million from 3,663 theaters.”. Given that the film has a relatively minimal budget of $30M, it will surely make that and then some across domestic and international box offices. The more damning financial concern is how much the rights for The Exorcist cost Universal, with most sources saying the number is around $400M.

Notably, the release date of “The Exorcist: Believer” was pushed up one week to not clash with the upcoming TAYLOR SWIFT film. While this was probably the right move for the film it will be interesting to see how the rest of the trilogy progresses with these kinds of returns.
