Universal and Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Remaking Wes Craven Classic 'THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS'

We had a feeling this was gonna happen and boy oh boy were we right. Hollywood is now taking a stab at the criminally underrated Wes Craven 90s flick, The People Under the Stairs, which will be penned by Doom Patrol and Night Sky scribe Ezra Claytan Daniels for Universal Pictures and Jordan Peele‘s Monkeypaw Productions, reports Deadline.

Monkeypaw Productions will produce the film with Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld serving as producers. The project is still in early development.

The film is one of our favorites and we’re eager to see what Jordan Peele and crew due with this 90s staple.

For those who aren’t familiar with the film, here’s the official synopsis.

The People Under the Stairs is a 1991 American horror comedy film written and directed by Wes Craven and starring Brandon Adams, Everett McGill, Wendy Robie, and A. J. Langer. The plot follows a young boy and two adult robbers who become trapped in a house belonging to a neighborhood's crooked landlords after breaking in to steal their collection of gold coins as the boy learns a dark secret about them and what also lurks in their house.

Craven has stated that The People Under the Stairs was partially inspired by a news story from the late 1970s, in which two burglars broke into a Los Angeles household, inadvertently causing the police to discover two children who had been locked away by their parents. The film was a surprise commercial success, and has been analyzed for its satirical depiction of gentrification, class warfare, and capitalism.
