Director Felipe Vargas Says The Upcoming 'LEPRECHAUN' Reboot Will Be “Gory, Sexy, and Crazy"

This weekend marks St. Paddy’s Day on the 17th and we already let you know that SYFY is hosting an all day marathon of the Leprechaun films in celebration of this Irish holiday. Now it seems that director, Felipe Vargas, of the upcoming Leprechaun remake wants to chime in before the holiday and give a brief update on what fans can expect from his new film.

Speaking on the Splattercast podcast this week, Vargas was nothing but excited for the film. “I’m so honored to be on that project,” the director would express before saying, “It’s such a cool franchise. To me, what makes the franchise so special is that it really is limitless. It doesn’t need to be grounded. It can just be gory, sexy, crazy.” He and his team of filmmakers are still figuring out the overall tone of the reboot, including what kind of horror/comedy balance the film will have, but Vargas added, “I would love for it to be scary as hell and also hilarious. I think we’re going back to a lot of the roots of Leprechaun in a lot of different ways, which I’m really excited about. But I think you also want to bring on a new audience. So it’s a really tricky one to figure out.”

Also, there is no indication that franchise star, Warwick Davis will be returning as the Leprechaun as usual. One good thing though is that Vargas assured the podcast and fans that he was going for a practical effects vibe more than anything. “That’s a part of my initial pitch. I think the practical effects are so key. Definitely want to bring that back in a big way.”

The Leprechaun franchise is a fan favorite amongst horror hounds and yes, although the film has seven sequels, fans still love that little green bastard. True, the other films in the franchise are, in some cases, so bad they’re good, with the Leprechaun going everywhere from Las Vegas to Space to The Hood. Gotta give it to him, that dude gets around.

We have no release date as of yet either for this new reboot of Leprechaun but we are hopeful that by the end of the year we will hear some more news.

Until then, you can stream the original Leprechaun on Peacock.
