FERAL: A New Furry Friend Adventure From The Creators of Stray Dogs
Let it be noted that as I write this review - one handed I might add - I am bouncing and lulling a cat to sleep.
Calling all the cat people! Crawl out from under the bed and stop hissing, because you will want to hear about this purr-fect new comic series from Image Comics!
From the creators of Stray Dogs, comes an all new furry friend adventure featuring three (mostly) fearless felines as they try to make their way home during a gruesome rabies outbreak. FERAL follows Ellsie, Lord Fluffy Britches, and Patch are indoor cats who have found themselves stranded in a forest without their human. The cats frantically look for a way home all while trying to avoid the infected “bad kind” animals. A single scratch or bite seals your fate as a feral, blood thirsty beast!
Unlike any art I have seen in recent years, Trish Forstner and Tony Fleecs create a nostalgic art style that mimics classic Disney art design. Using the comfort and appeal of the innocence of your childhood, then hits you with a gory mess of blood. The juxtaposition is jarring and highly effective in creating immediate empathy for our three kittens.
Writer Tony Fleecs creates an immediately immersive story full of action from page one. Our three cats have distinct caricaturistic personalities, as most cats do, that quickly reveal their cat-sibling dynamic and make it impossible to not fall in love with them. In tandem with the nostalgic “Disney-esque” art by both Fleece and Trish Forstner, this created the perfect “comfort” horror comic.
Fleecs has alluded to the likelihood of this becoming a lengthy series with many adventures for our purr-fect pals.
Issue #2 was released on April 24th along with special edition covers of the first two installments featuring feline twists on classic horror movie covers. A THIRD printing has just been announced for issue #1!
I am exceedingly eager to continue this series and highly encourage all animal lovers to support your local comic store and get a copy!

Jordan von Netzer considers himself to be a horror aficionado, with a particular love for 90's slashers. He enjoys talking about anything that has to do with the entertainment industry. Fun fact, he did his final college Film & Video Studies paper over Alfred Hitchcock and Wes Craven. In 2011, he met Wes at the Scream 4 premiere and got to tell him all about it.
