Foreign Serial Killer's You've PROBABLY Never Heard About
The FBI has stated that “At any one time, there are over 50 active serial killers in America.” That’s JUST the U.S., what about the world?
We have a list of some of the most evil and prolific serial killers from around the globe that have not gotten the attention that names like Kemper, Bundy, or even Manson have here in the states.
While the United States is focused on rampaging gunmen and mass shootings, murder and violence are very much a real part of everyday life in other parts of the world. These atrocities should be heeded, for they are a constant reminder of the very real danger that lurks just beneath the veneer of a peaceful society.
Pedro López
Known as "The Monster of the Andes," this Colombian serial killer is believed to have murdered over 300 people (mostly, if not exclusively, young girls) in Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador.
In 1980, he was caught attempting to lure a vendor's daughter from a busy market in Ecuador. After his arrest, he confessed to an undercover officer posing as a fellow inmate. In this way, police discovered the burial locations of 57 bodies. In total, Lopez was charged with 110 murders in Ecuador, and his confessions indicated another 200 in Colombia and Peru.
On July 31, 1981, he confessed to the murder of 57 girls. He served the then-maximum sentence of 16 years, after which he was deported back to Columbia. There he was declared insane and institutionalized in 1995. In 1998 he was declared sane and released. He vanished, and his whereabouts are still unknown.
Luis Garavito
This Colombian serial killer was convicted of murdering 189 boys in the 1990s. In 1997, a mass grave containing the bodies of 36 boys was found near the city of Pereira. Luis Alfredo Garavito was arrested in 1999 on suspicion of sexually assaulting a young boy. He confessed to murdering 140 young boys. He was eventually charged with 189 murders and sentenced to 835 years in prison.
Pedro Rodrigues Filho
Nicknamed Pedrinho Matador (Little Peter the Killer), this Brazilian was convicted of murdering 71 people, including his own father. Many of the murders occurred while Filho was in prison, the victims being fellow inmates. In 2003, he was sentenced to 128 years, but he will only have to serve 30 under Brazilian law.
Alexander Pichushkin
In 2007, Russian serial killer Alexander Pichushkin was convicted of killing 48 people. Most of his murders occurred in the early 2000s. He would lure people into Moscow's Bittsevsky Park by asking them to have a drink with him over his dog's grave. He would then beat his victims to death with a blunt instrument and leave them in a sewer pit, sometimes while they were still alive.
He was arrested in 2006 after murdering a coworker who had told her son that she was going on a walk with Pichushkin. After his arrest, police found a chessboard with dates written on 62 of the 64 squares. Apparently, he was trying to kill as many people as there were squares on the board, which resulted in him being nicknamed "The Chessboard Killer." In 2007, he was convicted of 48 counts of murder and 3 counts of attempted murder and sentenced to life in prison.
Andrei Chikatilo
Also known as the "Red Ripper," this former soviet school teacher was responsible for murdering at least 52 young people. His modus operandi was to befriend his victims at train or bus stops and then lure them to a secluded place. He would then sexually assault, murder, and mutilate them, gouging out their eyes and sometimes eating their sexual organs.
After over a decade of killing, Chikatilo was arrested on November 20, 1990, for suspicious activity. Police brought in a psychologist who had worked previously to profile the killer in order to talk to him. Chikatilo eventually confessed to him. He was convicted of 52 murders and executed in 1994.
Anatoly Onoprienko
Known also as "The Terminator," "The Beast of Ukraine," and "Citizen O," Anatoly Onoprienko was convicted of 52 murders in Ukraine, many of them occurring between 1995 and 1996. His M.O. was to break into an isolated house, steal what valuables he could find, rape any women present, and murder the entire family and any other witnesses using a 12-gauge shotgun.
On April 16, 1996, police raided Onoprienko's house and arrested him. They found over 120 items linked to unsolved murders. Onoprienko eventually confessed to 52 murders, telling police that voices in his head told him to do it. He received a death sentence which was commuted to life in prison.
Yang Xinhai
This Chinese man admitted to killing 65 people and raping 23 women between 1999 and 2003. Yang Xinhai used an iron hammer to commit the murders, burying it and getting a new one in between each crime. He was arrested after acting suspiciously during a routine police inspection in 2003. He was executed in 2004.
Robert Pickton
Robert Pickton is a Canadian pig farmer who was convicted in 2007 of murdering six women and sentenced to life in prison. He was charged with another 20 murders but never convicted. Police had been receiving tips about Pickton since 1997, but they didn't act upon then until 2003, meaning that many of his murders could have been prevented. The real horror, though, is why trying and convicting him was so difficult: he allegedly fed the bodies of his victims to his pigs.
