Modern horror movies are increasingly centering their plots on social media influencers as protagonists, who are leveraging their online personas and the omnipresent connectivity of social networks to craft chilling narratives. These horror films tend to explore the dark side of digital fame, where influencers' relentless pursuit of internet fame, endless followers, vand constant likes often leads them into perilous situations. The integration of social media in modern-day horror movies not only reflects contemporary societal obsessions but can also heighten the tension for the main character. They can do this by utilizing real-time engagement and the voyeuristic nature of online platforms, which can create some terrifying moments that will keep audiences glued to their screens as much as they are to their favorite social media pages. This new trend allows for a fresh take on horror, merging the virtual and physical realms to create a uniquely terrifying experience that will make any horror fan want to click like and share.

TERROR FILMS RELEASING has teamed with writer/director Jay Nuzum to release his influencer horror film, ‘Sapien’.

This movie stars Madison Pine in the lead role, the film follows popular influencer Abby Soulseeker as she documents her solo traveling journey for her fans after a sudden breakup. At first, the world seems like a new incredible place to explore, but she quickly realizes she has crossed the threshold of evil, where a demon-haunted world awaits, bent on her destruction.

Writer/Director Jay Nuzum shared their thoughts recently in a press release about the making of this movie:

SAPIEN began as a project to shed light on the plight of the homeless in America and convey a realistic view of that very real human challenge.  It also is a portrayal of human trafficking, drug abuse and mental health crises which are an epidemic in this country and across the world. This is a work of fiction but many of the moments developed in the script were based on actual events conveyed through people I encountered while researching this project and gathering footage on the streets. Ultimately it is a horror film and must serve the demands of the genre but at the end of the day, if a greater awareness of these social challenges are examined, then the film will have achieved its goal.”

TFR will roll the film out across multiple platforms on August 30th, 2024, including Watch Movies Now, PlayNow Media, UDU TV, Kings of Horror, and many more. Stay tuned to Macabre Daily for our full review of this movie, coming soon.
