'THE BLACK PHONE' Takes Box Office With $23 Million Opening Weekend
It’s been about 10yrs since the team of director Scott Derrickson, writer C. Robert Cargill and star Ethan Hawke, scared things up at the theaters with SINISTER and they have done it once again with Blumhouse and Universal Pictures, ‘THE BLACK PHONE.
The film was released over the weekend and has been getting strong reviews from critics and fans alike. It is even being reported that the film is overperforming at the box office. Who says original horror is dead?
The Black Phone finished in the #4 spot on the domestic box office charts for the weekend, scaring up an impressive $23.4 million domestically and $35.8 million worldwide thus far!
Let’s compare: SINSITER debuted with an $18 million domestic box office. It went on to pull in $80 million globally and in 2015, had a sequel. Could we see the same for ‘The Black Phone’?
The Black Phone pulling in this much at the box office gives us hope that original horror, based off of novels or short stories (the film was based off of a Joe Hill short story back in 2005.) has a decent shot of taking over the cinemas once more. This is the first film that ISN’T part of an already established franchise to do this as of late.
A sequel seems to be the right course for the film and we are totally into the idea of exploring who “The Grabber” truly is.
