"X-MEN '97" Head Writer Confirms Mister Sinister Will Be The Revival's Lead Villain
X-Men The Animated series was, by and large, a major part of growing up in the 90s and Saturday morning cartoons. The series ended on a cliffhanger where Professor X went off with Llandra to space to “recover” and the X-MEN were left leaderless. After 76 episodes, the show ended back in 1997, but Marvel Studios plans to revisit the franchise in this year's Disney+ revival X-Men '97.
A great thing about the series was the vocal cast who played the various mutants and villains on the show and we can confirm that MOST of the cast is returning to reprise their roles.
Today we have news that head writer Beau DeMayo has now confirmed the identity of the show's lead villain. We speculated for awhile but it is now fully locked in that Mister Sinister will be the shows main big bad. He was voiced by Christopher Britton during a handful of appearances in the original show, but it's unclear whether the actor will return to reprise the role.
Addressing fans during the "X-Men: 60 Uncanny Years Live Virtual Event" (via Toonado.com), DeMayo said: "A very, very, very, very favourite character of mine and many others, Mister Sinister, will rear his ugly head from the past with a pretty foolproof plan to destroy the X-Men once and for all."
With Magneto planning to join the X-Men and put his villainous past behind him, it makes sense for a bad guy like Mister Sinister to take center stage and we're sure his interest in cloning will come into play here.
There were talks to have John Hamm play a live action version of Mister Sinister for Fox before the Disney merger and we can bet on seeing him sometime in the near future, whenever Marvel brings the X-MEN to the forefront of the MCU.
